  • | 8:00am - 4:30pm | Local Events, education, conference
    - Imagine 1,500 plus students and parents gathered in one place gaining a comprehensive understanding of the entire college readiness process – how to work hard in school, how to apply for admission, from learning how to seek scholarships, and apply for financial aid, to gaining tips on how to excel and graduate from college. This is exactly what the CLD Annual College Prep Conference & College Fair plans to provide.
In collaboration with college and university administrators, CLD will expose students and parents throughout the state of Indiana to the idea of college as an available option and to the many opportunities that a college education affords. Breakout sessions such as Creating a Standout Application, Financial Aid 101, and Parent Purpose: Your Role in the College Admission Process, are just a few of the informative and interactive sessions that will be presented during this conference.

This conference will provide resources for youth and parents to help change behavior and values while guiding them to a self-directed path that will help them achieve in high school, enroll in and graduate from college, and gain employment in their career choice. BREAKFAST AND LUNCH INCLUDED.

  • | 11:00am - 2:00pm | Special Interest, city market, tomlinson hall, Dietrich Bohlen
    - Our guided tour of the Catacombs shows you a Roman-looking expanse of brick arches beneath the outdoor Whistler Plaza of City Market. The Catacombs qualify as both a ruin and a redevelopment opportunity. They’re what remains of Tomlinson Hall, an imposing building whose main hall seated 3,500 people. Dietrich Bohlen designed the hall in 1886 to complement his earlier work at City Market. Tomlinson Hall burned in January 1958, turning Market Street into an icy lake as firefighters battled the blaze. The city took down the remains later that year. Our Catacombs don’t contain bones or crypts but rather scores of brick barrel-vaulted arches that remain from what was the basement of Tomlinson Hall.

    TOUR SCHEDULE
We offer Catacombs tours on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays, May through October 2018, including an additional Saturday before Halloween:

    May 5 and 19
    June 2 and 16
    July 7 and 21
    August 4 and 18
    September 1 and 15
    October 6 and 20 and 27

The tour lasts approximately 30 minutes and departs from Whistler Plaza, the west plaza of Indianapolis City Market. In the event of bad weather, look for the check-in table inside the West Wing rather than on the plaza.

Tickets must be purchased in advance! The tour costs $12 per person age 12 and up; $6 per child (age 6-11); $10 per member of Indiana Landmarks, and $5 per child of a member. Purchase tickets online or by calling Indiana Landmarks, 317-639-4534 or reservations@indianalandmarks.org.

Pressed steel (also known as tin) dollhouses were first introduced in 1948 and dominated the 1950s, remaining popular until the 1970s. The economic boom after WWII, an active steel industry, and the introduction of hard plastic, made mass production of tin dollhouses and plastic furniture possible. The first metal houses on the retail scene originated from ideas used in dollhouses that had been constructed in the late 19th century, resembling the early lithographed models of wooden or paperboard dollhouses. - The Museum of Miniature Houses features the Sahlberg, an elaborate miniature house measuring 49 inches tall, 72 inches wide and 20 inches deep that has unexpectedly become available for our museum to display. Jimmy Landers and Carl Sahlberg are the main architects. Seven other miniature artisans collaborated on the project, including Linda Orleff of Lighting Bug Ltd. who designed the wall sconces, a two-tier chandelier, and other fixtures, and Barbara Sabia who custom-made the 10-inch high stained glass windows in the library.

Jimmy named this new house the Sahlberg in honor of Carl Sahlberg of Creative Reproductions 2 Scale who created the cabinetry and wired the entire house for electricity. A unique part of the wiring system is that the house is lit with a DC power source instead of an AC transformer. Carl explains, "The DC power source works better. It has a constant current which makes all the lights last longer and being direct current, allow one to use LEDs and newer electronic components such as remote controls. We have over 500 LED bulbs."

Jimmy has been building houses in miniature for many years. His pieces have included the Victorian Helmerich House, the Colonial (Brandywine) dollhouse, the 1900 series of storefronts, the Flatiron Building, the 1909 River Valley Hardware Store, and many others.

The Sahlberg is expected to remain on display through January 6, 2019.

    - Michael Janosky shares his landscape paintings. Michael Janosky is a Resident Studio Artist at Nickel Plate Arts and a juried artist member of Oil Painters of America, which is dedicated to preserving and promoting excellence in representational art. In 2015, Michael’s work was juried into the Hoosier Salon Annual Exhibition and he was accepted into Indiana Artists. Working in oils, Michael enjoys rendering the Indiana landscape as well as Lake Michigan and its beaches and dunes. In addition to his studio, his work is available at the Hoosier Salon Gallery and the Indiana Artisan Store in the Carmel Arts & Design District and is exhibited at galleries and museums throughout the state.
Artist's Statement: I am inspired by the colors, shapes, atmosphere, and seasonal changes I see in the local landscape and I find beauty in the subtle and simple aspects of our natural environments. Striving to remain truthful to my subject, I look to emphasize that which makes it unique and interesting. Throughout the painting process, I also appreciate the feeling of the paint coming off the brush and the rhythm and motion of working across the canvas. In a representational style, I strive to capture the mood of the scene and relay a sense of time and place. My palette, sense of color, and brushwork are among the attributes that distinguish my work.

Fun things to do in Zionsville

Since 1986 the Town Planner Calendar has been keeping families across America up-to-date about events and other fun things to do right in their hometown.

Delivered free of charge every December to millions of homes across America, our full-sized, full-color calendar is a time-tested and beloved tool for helping families stay organized. The large date blocks are not only loaded with lots of nearby events and fun things to do, there's plenty of room for you to record your own family's important events like birthdays, anniversaries, parties -- anything you have planned -- so everybody in the house can see them whenever they go to the fridge, out the front door, or wherever you choose to display it.

But there's more! Every calendar is full of coupons from popular local merchants, so you can save money while supporting small businesses right in your hometown.

And don't miss our beautiful full-color photography! Every month you'll recognize a new photo from someplace close to home, submitted to us by a local photographer. If you'd like to have your own hometown photos included in our calendar, please contact your local publisher for more information.

We truly believe it's better to "keep it local". From coast to coast and border to border, our network of franchisees work with organizations and merchants right in their community to make sure you get the information and savings you care about. We prefer to feature family-friendly events that are a short walk or drive away, and coupons from local businesses so you can support your hometown economy.

If there's something happening close to home that folks in your neighborhood need to know about, why not submit it to us today? Please note that publication of your event is subject to approval by your local Town Planner publisher.

If there's no Town Planner calendar in your area, you could be looking at a great business opportunity! Town Planner franchisees set their own hours and can work out of their homes while providing a valuable service to both homeowners and local businesses in the area.
